Casterton College
Replacement of external high powered flood lighting and internal fluorescent tubes with energy saving Zeta LED lighting
As the importance of energy efficiency and carbon saving increases Casterton College in Rutland is believed to be the first college in the U.K. to switch its exterior floodlighting entirely over to highly energy efficient LED lighting.
Lowering its energy consumption by at least 75% the College has installed 33 special fittings from Zeta LED which can help reduce carbon emissions by 19 tonnes per year compared to the previous conventional lighting.
Each 60 watt ZS LED floodlight is estimated to save 577 Kg of CO2 annually totaling 19 tonnes per year for the 33 and over 285 tonnes over the products 15 year+ lifetime.
A reduction in energy consumption by on average 390 watts per unit and the incorporation of PIR sensors will enable Casterton to save an estimated £3600 annually whilst providing a light source that is brighter, more efficient and more effective for CCTV detection.
Steve Craig, college business manager, has likened the CCTV images viewed at night as being "as good and as clear as if they were being filmed in daylight".
A single classroom and staff room have also been converted to revolutionary LED fluorescent tube replacements which will save over 50% of the energy previously consumed by the conventional lighting, as well as reducing maintenance and replacement costs.
The college hopes to have every classroom changed over to LED by spring of 2010. "The obvious savings and lowering of the colleges' carbon footprint are benefits we could no longer ignore" said Steve.
Staff at the college are very pleased with the performance of both systems, especially with the manner in which the CCTV camera images are illuminated by the LED floodlights.
Pollard electrical completed the installation of all the LED light fittings and were impressed by how easy they were to install.
